Checking for a Warrant in Northampton County
Sort the matter first. Adult traffic charges, misdemeanors, and felony preliminary hearings usually begin in Northampton General District Court, while felony trial files belong to Circuit Court. Juvenile, family, and support matters go through J&DR. Access there is narrower. A magistrate can issue criminal process before any court case shows up online. Search under the court named on your summons or order, then confirm any process entry with the office that holds the record.
- Choose the likely court and select Northampton where the search allows a locality filter.
- Try the spelling on the paper, then use a case number or hearing date to narrow a common-name result.
- Open the case and review hearing, disposition, and service/process fields together.
- If the result is blank or unclear, call the issuing clerk or ask Sheriff dispatch how to route a service question.
- Before taking action, get case-specific advice from a Virginia lawyer or the court.
Northampton County Search Results Need Confirmation
Virginia's Online Case Information System (OCIS) searches public court cases statewide by name, case number, or hearing date. The Northampton County GDC portal adds a one-court search with Current, Archived, or All data choices and a service and process search. Neither one is a live warrant roster. Spell the name as the summons does. If several cases match, sort them by court, date, charge, or case number. A shared name is not proof of identity. A blank result can mean a different court, a restricted file, or an update that has not posted. The OCIS search help explains the controls and result categories. Read it before treating a process field as current. Source: official OCIS portal.

That screen is only a route into court information. For a live process question in Northampton County, the issuing clerk or magistrate is the source.
Northampton County Warrant Types
Virginia uses several forms of process. A Northampton County record may not carry the phrase bench warrant you expected; the court, the reason, and the case stage matter more.
| Process | How It Arises | Usual Route |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest warrant | Complaint, oath, and probable-cause review | Magistrate or other authorized issuer; Sheriff may serve |
| Capias or show cause | Court process after a missed appearance or alleged noncompliance | Issuing court and its clerk |
| Traffic process | Summons, hearing, payment, or nonappearance issue | Northampton GDC and, where applicable, DMV notice |
| Search or protective order | Different legal purpose and access rules | Magistrate or court, with privacy limits |
Northampton County Courts Hold Different Files
Northampton’s court campus sits in Eastville, but each office keeps a different record set. The 2020-era county material describes the historic courthouse green and the newer complex on The Hornes. That setting is useful for orientation; the court printed on a paper still controls where a status question belongs.
Use the Virginia courts directory to reach Northampton Circuit, GDC, and J&DR separately. Circuit handles felony trials and appeals. GDC handles adult traffic, misdemeanors, and preliminary hearings. J&DR handles juvenile and family work plus some adult matters, with confidentiality limits.
The official Eastville town page places the court and public-safety complex in the county seat.

Inside a Northampton County Warrant Record
A Northampton County case page may list court, case number, charge, hearing, disposition, and service or process fields. What shows depends on court level and access law. It is an index, not a warrant status.
| Case number | GT12345678-90 is an official help-page example format, not a Northampton case. |
|---|---|
| Court | Identifies the case forum. Verify Northampton and the court division. |
| Hearing | Lists an appearance date or event when available. |
| Service/process | May show a return or process entry; the public display can vary. |
| Disposition | Describes a case outcome and may not resolve a separate capias. |
The Northampton Sheriff Serves Process
The Northampton Sheriff's Office handles civil process for Northampton County. Deputies deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other court notices. The office posts no active-warrant roster online. There is no separate warrant squad and no public warrant-status form. Dispatch can take a general question, though the county does not promote it as a live warrant lookup line. For office and dispatch contacts, the official Sheriff page lists them, and 911 still works for emergencies. Ask the clerk or the Sheriff which one holds a specific service record.

A service question and a court-status question may require separate records from separate offices.

Issuing and Serving Warrants in Northampton County
Issuing and serving are separate steps. Region 7, District 32 magistrates serve Northampton and Accomack. A magistrate reviews complaints and may issue criminal process within that authority, while judges and clerks can issue specified forms too. The official magistrate region page describes the regional service area. The Northampton Sheriff serves court process and carries out local law-enforcement duties. That is not the same as issuing. Ask the court about its order, ask the Sheriff about a service return, and call 911 for urgent safety matters in Northampton County.
Northampton County Capias and FTA Terms
Virginia's form DC-361 is titled “Capias, Attachment of the Body.” People often say bench warrant or FTA warrant. Those words do not make every missed-court event identical. In Northampton County, look for the court entry plus any later recall, new hearing, or service return.
- Capias
- Court-initiated process that directs a person’s appearance or custody under the order.
- Show cause
- A court notice asking a person to address alleged noncompliance.
- Recall
- The issuing court withdraws process; another court obligation may remain.
- Disposition
- A case outcome that does not by itself establish process status.
The Virginia district forms list gives the official form titles. It does not include a completed Northampton County warrant or prove that any process remains open.
If You Have a Warrant in Northampton County
Find out which court issued the order. Ask what the docket says now. A lawyer can review the case and talk through whether an appearance, a motion, or another step fits. Never let a name match or a third-party message decide a trip to a Northampton County station or jail.
Confirm first. Northampton has not published a universal surrender procedure, same-day recall rule, bond amount, or public bond-payment window. Ask the issuing court, magistrate, Sheriff, jail, or counsel for current instructions that fit the case.
If process is withdrawn, keep the order. A Northampton County clerk's written confirmation works too. A payment, a release, or a case disposition may not address every separate process entry.
Clearing Northampton County Court Process
Fines and costs are not the same thing as bail, and neither one recalls a warrant on its own. Under the 2A fines-and-costs policy, most criminal and traffic convictions get 90 days before a payment agreement is required. Deferred and installment terms are available. Northampton County residents renewing a plan in good standing must sign DC-210 in person before the original plan ends. The one-time account-management fee is separate too. It attaches to payment agreements only, never to bond. Ask the Northampton County GDC clerk first. Is the issue an unpaid balance, a show-cause date, a capias, or a DMV notice? A payment plan alone does not withdraw process. Ask the court what proof to keep.
Northampton County Warrant Records and Public Access
Virginia's Freedom of Information Act covers records held by Northampton County bodies, though exemptions apply. Court records follow their own rules. Juvenile, family, sealed, and investigative files can be withheld or limited. Request an existing, date-bounded record. Do not ask an office to create a live legal conclusion for you.
Useful law: Va. Code § 2.2-3704 covers FOIA requests; §§ 2.2-3706 and 2.2-3706.1 address law-enforcement and investigative records; §§ 16.1-301, 16.1-305, and 16.1-305.01 protect juvenile and support information. See the Virginia FOIA response rule and ask the affected clerk about court access.
The Northampton County request page routes Sheriff and jail records to the Sheriff. Court material goes to the proper clerk, and a Circuit request has its own separate Circuit Clerk route.
Finding Northampton Warrants Across County Lines
Belle Haven sits in two counties. Most of the incorporated town lies in Accomack, though an address can still fall in Northampton County. Check the citation, incident address, or court paper first. Confirm the county before you run any warrant search. A Northampton County result never substitutes for checking an Accomack court. Remember, too, that the whole-place Census population is not a Northampton-only count. The county's FOIA instructions keep it simple. Send an existing-record request straight to the office that holds it. Name the county, court, agency, process type, and time period so the clerk can route it. For the full local split, see the Belle Haven warrant search page. It puts the county boundary before the search steps.
Northampton County Federal Warrants Follow Norfolk Division
Federal cases skip Northampton County's own courts. Circuit, GDC, and J&DR do not handle them. The county sits in the Norfolk Division of the Eastern District of Virginia. A docket search on PACER shows public federal case entries. It is not a county warrant roster, though, and some records stay sealed or unavailable in public search. The EDVA jurisdiction page lists the Norfolk Division route. Federal agencies enforce federal warrants, including the U.S. Marshals Service. A state case search cannot certify federal status.
